DIGITISATION IS THE CONVERSION OF AN ANALOG SIGNAL IN TO DIGITAL SIGNAL OR CODE CONVERTION OF A PHISICAL OBJECT IN TO ELECTRONIC VERSION ENABLING THE OBJECT TO BE STORED EDITED DISPLAYED ON A COMPUTER AND DISSEMINATED OVER NETWORKS AND THE WORLD WIDE WEB

 

Digitisation is the process of converting a real world object into a binary file that a computer can work with. But digitisation goes beyond data capture, it is the complete process of producing a digital resource from an original source.

 

Physical preservation of manuscripts is a difficult task, even under the best of conditions. Indian paper manuscripts may last four hundred years while palm leaf manuscripts may, under the best of conditions, last seven hundred years. And many of India’s ancient manuscripts are now in a bad condition. In the past, scribes would have been called in and would have meticulously copied them (perhaps adding scribal mistakes to those that might already be there).

 

The most promising strategy for saving the intellectual and artistic content of endangered volumes is to transform or convert it to a different medium - by copying it to film or digital electronic form. Joint Task Force on Text and Image, April 1992, Preserving the Illustrated Text.

 

 

Le traitement des images est une étape incontournable de la numérisation des manuscrits anciens. Les traitements présentés ici permettent de restaurer ou nettoyer les images, d’extraire les différentes structures du document (illustrations, éléments graphiques et textuels, lignes de texte) et dans certains cas de reconnaître les symboles textuels ou musicaux présents dans l’image. Nous décrivons ces différents traitements suivant leur niveau : prétraitement, segmentation, analyse et reconnaissance ainsi que les techniques de base qui y sont associées.
